Feast (2005)

If you like horror/action with copious amounts of gore, the tongue firmly planted in cheek and some fun performances in a film that is clearly made with love (and a modest budget), then you could do much, much worse than 'Feast'. Directed by John Culagher, this is pretty much a perfect flick to watch with your fellow gorehounds and just have a ball.

Most other people will probably be put off by some of the events depicted here. Their loss.

The film wastes no time: we are in a bar in a very, very remote area. No one can probably explain why the heck there is even a bar out there in the middle of nowhere, but we need seclusion for the plot to make just a little sense. We are quickly introduced to the patrons of said bar with hilarious title cards spelling out their names, what they are/do and their life expectancy.

That shit is hilarious, right there.

In storms our hero, bloodied and carrying the head of what can only be described as 'a monster', who says they are in grave danger and everyone had better buckle up.

And then our hero gets offed in spectacular fashion.

Told you this film was funny, didn't I?

But don't fret, pretty soon our heroine drops by and things really get cracking. A small creature gets in and immediately wreaks havoc, taking off legs and other shenanigans, before it gets caught in a cooler. Outside, mommy and daddy monster are desperately trying to get at our protagonists.

Why? Because they're monsters. Who cares why?

The rest of the film is a siege, with copious amounts of ickiness (Beer Guy probably gets the worst of it all during the film. Egad, that guy has to endure some pretty gnarly stuff) before an explosive finale.

This film is a hoot. It never wastes time and gets straight to the point. The characters are clear and you don't need any names to get a feel for them. They stay true to their depiction on the title cards. But what makes this film stand out, is the gore. Legs get yanked off, monsters do projectile vomiting, eyes get plucked out, heads crushed, the male monster gets his junk unceremoniously cut off... It's glorious gorious.

No, that's not a typo.

If you have to nitpick, then some of the scenes near the end are shot and edited a bit too frenetically and it gets hard to keep track of what is happening. I understand why they did it (to keep the monster suits a bit vague), but you can get some motion sickness out of it.

Other than that, this delivers what it promises: an unabashedly good time with monsters and gore and expendable characters. And laughs.

Fun times.
