D-War (2007)
It has dragons, and some fighting, but wars?
Not so much.
Based on a Korean legend for a change, 'D-War' tells the tale of celestial snakes that get the opportunity to turn into a heavenly dragon once every 500 years. They can only achieve this when a girl is imbued with some spirit or other, pretty much condemning her to die at the age of 20 so the dragon can ascend. But of course there's an evil serpent called Buraki who covets this power. 500 years ago he failed, so now in the modern day, can he complete his ascension and expand his power together with his army?
No, not really, no.
Credit where credit is due: some of the CG looks decent enough, especially when the massive snakes are involved. Most of the other dragons and magic on display look hokey or just plain weird. If you find yourself wondering how the story has to play out: it's not because of you. They skip and hop around a lot of stuff after a ton of exposition. It often feels as if filmreels are missing, because the editing is all over the place.
And the acting? Pretty awful across the board. Even Robert Forster is phoning this one in and it's not a pretty sight. He basically is your exposition dump and deus ex machine across the entire film and it's not pretty, even if everyone else is wooden or just plain awful.
So no: this isn't a decent film. Even if you enjoy poorly made films, this one isn't special, as it tries too hard to be a 'good' film and it fails on pretty much every level.
Skip!
