The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

Are you ready for an unabashedly good time? Then you've come to the right place, as this one is an absolute hoot. It's weird, cooky, has memorable characters, is quotable as all heck and is filled to the brim with hipswinging songs. What's not to love?

Unless you don't care for musicals and openly sexual characters, of course. But you would be missing out.

In essence the filmversion of the stageplay, this plays out exactly the same. Don't expect something along the lines of a coherent plot, because there isn't, not really. The 'plot' only serves as the segue to musical pieces. You know, like 'Cats', only way more groovy.

Oh, and this is also the film debut of the legend Tim Curry, who actually already performed his role on stage.

Brad and Janet are a young couple on their way to see their old science teacher. During a storm, Brad takes a wrong turn and their car breaks down, so they head off to the nearest house which turns out to be a massive mansion filled with eccentric people that merge the spooky with the horny. It is also here that they meet the one person that can make anyone question their sexuality: dr Frank-N-Furter. He has created a person (Rocky) to be his personal plaything, but suffice to say Furter humps anything and everything that breathes. In this way, he also releases Brad and Janet's inhibitions. But the plot thickens, as Furter and his minions are not what they appear to be, even if what they appear to be is already pretty out there...

So yes, the plot is as silly as it gets and as bare bones as possible, but that truly doesn't matter. You're here for the characters and the songs and by golly, does this one deliver. Not only is this one filled with extremely catchy songs, you'll be humming and singing them for days. Try the 'Time Warp' on for size. Or 'Sweet Transvestite'. Heck, feel the tears well up with 'Don't Dream It'. Damn, these tunes are good and especially catchy.

But this film would probably be nothing without the starmaking performance by Tim Curry. Heck, he is so good, everyone else is relegated to smirking on the side. Yes, our main characters are Brad and Janet and sure, Riff Raff, Magenta and Columbia are cool, but it's always Frank-N-Furter at the centre and mister Curry's performance is thé reason why. Not only is his look iconic, but it's the swagger, the delivery and that sweet, sweet voice that simply oozes seduction.

It gives a person shivers just thinking about it, and in a good way.

Just go and see this one if you have never done so. Rewatch it and enjoy yourself again. Let's do the Time Warp again.
