Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989)

You want some pure, escapist fun? Then this is your film.

Is it silly? Yes, it is. Does it have a story? Sort of? Does it make sense? No. Will you be entertained?

Well, yes, that is kind of the point.

Bill and Ted are two close friends with the ambition of starting a band. Only downside is: they can't play, but hey, don't let something like that ever hold you back. They're not doing too spiffingly in school and it gets worse when they are about to fail History. This will mean that Ted will be sent off to military school in Alaska.

Unbeknownst to the boys, their music will form the basis for the future in which everything is most excellent. But they have to write their music and this can not happen if Ted is shipped off, so a plan is hatched to send them to the past in a time machine in order to make the best History presentation in - well - history.

So it will be done, and Bill and Ted set off, sort of kidnapping several important people from history, ranging from Billy the Kid to Socrates to Joan of Arc, Sigmund Freud, Beethoven and Genghis Khan. Heck, they even had Napoleon hitch an unsuspecting ride on their telephone box.

Yes, the time machine is a telephone box/booth. Whoever made this, had to have been aware of a certain British series. You might have heard from it. It's called 'Dr Who'. But to be fair: this box isn't bigger on the inside, so there's that.

As you might have guessed: this story makes no sense whatsoever. But does it matter? No, no in the slightest. Yes, the portrayal by Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter spawned a myriad of memes, and their expressions have entered the vernacular in more ways than one and this film ends on a high note, because how could it not? See, that is the thing: this is unadulterated escapist fun, something to take your mind of the horrid reality of the world today. In that respect, it is like a breath of fresh air every time you see it. It's pretty funny as well, if you can wrap your mind around the silliness and the - let's be honest here - stupidity of our main characters.

Sounds bogus, but it's actually rather excellent. *meedly meedly meedly*
