Battle Girls Versus Yakuza: Duel in Hell (2010)

If you think this is going to be an even more over-the-top sequel to the grindhouse tribute that was the first one: it isn't. Sure, the first two minutes give you some gore with a chainsaw, but that has nothing to do with the rest of this film, which is bland and boring as all heck.

It's been three years since the events of the first one, and Asami is back in her old neighbourhood. The Shoryu Clan is taking over everything and they have even hired a ruthless killer called Akira in order to stop Asami.

See, that sounds like a fun premise, right? Simple and ready to bring on the violence?

Well, that is most emphatically not what happens.

This is no longer shot like a tribute to the 70s, instead opting for what seems to be footage shot with a smartphone. Not only that, but this time, there is not even a script. Things just 'happen', dialogue feels like random improvisations that are dull and there is no plot whatsoever. Granted, the previous one didn't have much of a plot either, but there was a semblance of cohesion through it all. This one, not so much.

Even the fightscenes are boring and shot in an incredibly uninspired fashion. There aren't even that many fightscenes.

Yeah sure, they kill a baby with a katana. Ooh, look at us being edgy! No, that's just in poor taste and it comes out of nowhere.

'Duel in Hell' fails on every conceivable level and even at 70 minutes of runtime is a real slog to get through. It's boring, flat, has no narrative to speak of and doesn't even have fun gore or fights to keep you interested.

Ignore this one with a vengeance and rewatch the first one. That at least was fun in all its silliness.
