Astérix Chez les Bretons (1986)

What we have here, is once again a great adaptation of a well loved comic starring our two favourite Gaulish warriors: Asterix and Obelix. The fact that nearly all of these animated features are great, is not that surprising, seeing as they are based on undoubtedly some of the better comics around. 

Asterix is called upon by a distant cousin to come and help his village in Britain. Julius Caesar has conquered the isle, yet this one village still resists. However, they do not have anything resembling the magic potion the Gauls possess, so things are looking dire indeed. So Asterix and Obelix set off with a barrel of potion. Along the way, they come across pirates and many of the peculiarities that are so British. If they were any more British, you could call it 'tea and crumpets'. 

By far the best reason to see this, is how lovingly they poke fun at British customs and mannerisms. Maybe this is due to the age-old rivalry between France and Britain. Seeing as this is an almost exact replica of the comic by the same name, it is nice to see how they kept everything that worked, including the jokes and little stabs at each other. That's what you get when your artists are French, of course. But it never becomes insulting. 

The voice work is still pretty darn good, even though there is one thing that always irks me in the Dutch version (which is the only version I have). In the comics, typically English phrases are translated quite literally, which makes their speech patterns all the more funny. But here, most of the time, they just use the English, which - to me, at least - sort of ruins a lot of funny moments. However, this is a minor issue and it doesn't take away from the fun you will have while watching this.

Just a disclaimer though: if you have read the comic, you will not find anything new. I thought I'd better warn you about this.
