Wayne's World 2 (1993)
Ah, the everlasting problem of how to come up with a sequel that does at least almost as well as the original.
Not an easy task, by any stretch of the imagination.
Even harder if your original is goofy, goes everywhere at once and is based on loose skits. Sadly, this, the sequel to 'Wayne's World' does suffer a little in that respect, but not as much as you might expect.
Not a lot has changed, but this one does feel a little more like it has a more linear story. Bizarrely, that's also its weakest point. Where the previous one just had a 'story' to keep the jokes coming and in truth the story didn't really matter all that much, a lot of that irreverence is shaken off in favour of more focus on the story and that does make this one fall flat on its face several times. Wayne is having doubts about everything, even his relationship. And in the meantime, the spirit of Jim Morrison tells him to organise a festival.
Why?
No reason. Because this sort of film does not need reasoning of any kind.
The fact that Wayne breaks up with Cassandra feels out of place, though. It's supposed to bring some tension into the whole, but it feels terribly forced. Garth's dates with Honey Hornée (Kim Basinger) are funny, but go nowhere. Not necessarily a problem, but they're introduced fairly late in the story and aren't really all that funny.
I guess this one just tried a little too hard instead of going for irreverent jokes and insanity and it feels detrimental to the whole. A real shame, though, because the characters are still very likeable.
This one does have a couple of hilarious scenes. The one where Wayne meets Cassandra's father cracks me up every time, I really like the bizarre roadie and the YMCA-joke is a lot of fun. As for the rest, I can't help but prefer the original.
Not a must-see, but if you liked the first one and have some time to spare, you may want to give this one a viewing.
