The Water Horse (2007)

If you're looking for a film that warms your heart and provides some nice and easy entertainment, then this might be one for you.

Also, if you like either Scotland or the idea that there is such a thing as a Loch Ness Monster, then that goes double.

If you have no real affinity for any of those things, you can easily skip this one.

But let's start at the beginning, shall we?

'The Water Horse' centres around a young boy, Angus McMorrow. It is the early days of the Second World War, his father is off to fight in the war and he is left alone with his mother and sister. Angus is also deathly afraid of swimming. One day, he finds a mysterious egg that hatches and turns out to contain something that is called a water horse. Naturally, they bond, there are some shenanigans, the military has some sort of evil-ish twist in there and in the end everything turns out alright.

If it seems clichéd and familiar, that's because everything about this film is. It is no masterpiece, but simply an enjoyable adventure romp that ticks all the right boxes a film of this persuasion should.

It also never pretends to be anything more.

So why should you watch it? Well, like I said before, if you have a soft spot for Scotland, creature features and need a warm, fuzzy feeling to help you deal with the fact that the world is a cold, harsh place, then this is the ideal film for you. It also helps that the design of the water horse is cutesy enough to make little children not spontaneously crap their trousers.

There really isn't that much else to say. It's an enjoyable film and you won't feel as though you wasted any time of your life that could have been spent doing something else, but on the flipside: if you have never seen this one nor feel the need to see it, you're not really missing out on anything.

In short: you might want to catch this one if you have time, but it is hardly required viewing.

Fun film for little children, though.
